Biography

Sylvia Ann Soroka was born on December 26, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to the Very Rev. Gregory Soroka and Anastasia Panchison Soroka.

Her brothers and sisters were Igor, Zena, Leonid, Vladimir, Sergei, and Alexandra.

She married Joseph F. Elnitsky.

Her obituary appeared in the Binghamton [ New York] Press & Sun-Bulletin on Mar. 23, 2017 Sylvia A. Elnitsky, 93, of Vestal, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA the daughter of the late Very Rev. Gregory and Anastasia (Panchison) Soroka. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph F. Elnitsky, a WWII Navy veteran and a survivor of the USS Reuben James, the first US Navy ship sunk by hostile action in WWII.

She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Frank Urban, Vestal; three grandchildren, Mark Urban, Vestal; Rebecca (Tim) Doty, Manheim, PA; and Natasha (Corey) Brown, Rising Sun, IN. She has two great grandchildren, Linnaea and Lillian Doty.

She is survived by one brother, the Very Rev. Igor Soroka, Donora, PA and one sister, Zena Pecuch, AZ. She was preceded in death by three brothers, the Very Rev. Leonid Soroka, The Very Rev.Vladimir Soroka and Sergei Soroka, and a sister, Alexandra Bazil.

Before marriage she worked for the US Government in Washington, DC. She worked locally at EJ’s then in private home care. After marriage, she became a full time mother and homemaker.

She was a member of Sts, Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Endicott. Her faith, prayers and church were most important to her.

She died on March 21, 2017 in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. She is buried in Saint Tikhon Cemetery in South Canaan, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
