Chandos Sydney Cedric Brudenell-Bruce, 7th Marquess of Ailesbury, also Earl of Cardigan or Lord Cardigan from 1911 to 1961, was born on 26 Jan 1904. He is the son of George William James Chandos Brudenell-Bruce, 6th Marquess of Ailesbury and Caroline Sydney Anne Madden. He usually went by his middle name of Cedric. [1]
He was styled as Viscount Savernake from 1904 to 1911, then Earl of Cardigan from 1911 to 1961.
On 4 Aug 1961, he succeeded as the 7th Marquess of Ailesbury, Buckinghamshire plus the following titles:
Cedric married, firstly, Joan Houlton Salter (-1937) on 5 Jul 1924. [2] They had two children:
Cedric married, secondly, Joyce Frances Warwick-Evans (1917-) on on 11 Mar 1944. They divorced in 1948. [2]
Cedric married, thirdly, Jean Frances Margaret Wilson on 20 Feb 1950. [2] They had a child:
Cedric gained the rank of Major in the Royal Army Service Corps (Territorial Army). He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches, captured as a POW, and escaped from captivity.
Cedric held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) in 1950. He was appointed Commander, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (C.St.J.)
Cedric held the office of County Councillor for Wiltshire in 1961.
Cedric wrote five books under the name Cardigan, and two more under the name Ailesbury:
