DECOUX, Paul. Pvt.  //  CSRC, Index. This is a Paul De Coux in Company D (Marion Guards) of the the 22nd/21st

From a letter that Aunt Flora sent in Dec. 1980. She said Grandpa Paul DeCoux was a sharpshooter in the Civil ( Cicil in the transcript notes I have) War. He was just a boy but a good shot, and they had him guarding a well know spring of water, north of Vicksburg. So the story goes, he would hide up in a tree and when the Yankee soldiers came down at night to get water he would shoot them and run away. Many of the DeCouxs are buried at the Hollywood Cemetery in McComb, MS. Grandpa DeCoux's headstone had C.S.A. on it, which is probably some indication of military service for the confederate states. Uncle Junny has talked about a beautiful bedroom suite that Grandpa DeCoux had made for his wife Adelia. Aunt Flora said he was an accomplish(ed) woodworker and builder and repairer of furniture. Aunt Flora said Grandma Adelia DeCoux was a Baptist. One or more of Grandpa DeCoux's sisters wanted to raise Grandma Ellison and her sisters as Catholics. Grandpa DeCoux bitterly resisted the many food things of life offered the girls ( schooling, etc.) if they were allowed to be Catholic. Only one girl, the youngest -Georgia Ann- remained Catholic until her death. He died on Feb 8 1913. He was married to Adelaia Ann Collins on Dec 19 1866. Adelia Ann Collins was born on Mar 21 1850. Adelia Ann Collins Decoux was married in 1866. She was a woman of moral strength. She was a Protestant orphan. She was endowed with all the natural teaching for raising a large family. She ????? a strong character of fortitude with in each one. I loved her, she was kind to me. When I knew her, she never missed a sermon on Sunday or a prayer service on Wednesday, It was told to me, Rev. Gill made a remark from the pulpit- Mrs. DeCoux seems to be having a hard time finding someone to fill her seat. He noticed her seat was empty. Yes, she was missed, but she left a leg?????, few people can learn. A woman who practiced self-?????. According to Ruby De Armond Sicard, she died on Feb 9 1933. Paul DECOUX and Adelia Ann Collins had the following children: Leopold Decoux, Joseph Oscar DeCoux, William Aristide Decoux, Mary Camille DeCoux, Alexander Leon DeCoux, Vergil Lenhart DeCoux, David Eugene DeCoux, Adelaide DeCoux, Adelia Elmyra DeCoux, Georgia Ann Decoux, and Emile DeCoux.

Death

Paul died on 8 Mar 1913 in Pike County, MS aged 70.

Research Notes

Inconsistencies -

  • the birth and death date comes from the Find-a-grave website. He is buried along with other kin in Hollywood Cemetery in Mccomb, MS.
  • United States Headstone Applications for Military Veterans. The actual governmental data as put in for by his wife says he belongs to the 2nd LA Artillery. But someone scribbled corrections? Over this to Point Coupee Artillery.
  • Louisiana Burial Data confirms he died in 1923 and is buried in Mississippi

According to the geneologyvillage.com, there were three P. DeCoux's that served in the CSA from Louisiana. What is interesting is that you see these three individuals "enlist" in the different companies chronologically, which makes me believe that this is the same individual who either got shipped from company to company or was one who deserted and reconscripted.

Now, I think some of the confusion for the Point Coupee P. DeCoux and the 2nd Artillery P. DeCoux is here in his head stone application. It appears someone got a hold of the application and scribbled a lot of notes on it. One is where they changed his regiment.

From the research I've been looking at, there are three P. DeCoux's out there. And clarification on these would be welcomed. One is enigmatic, one served in the Point Coupee Artillery, and one served with the 2nd LA Artillery which was absorbed into the 21st LA Inf.
