Biography

MONCURE MARCH, NATIVE OF EASTON, DIES IN NEW YORK OF HEART ATTACK; WAS SON OF LATE PROF. F.A. MARCH

Moncure March, 72, a native of Easton and son of the late Prof. Francis Andrew March, noted philologist, who was a member of the Lafayette College faculty for 55 years, died yesterday morning of a heart attack as he reached Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 213 West Eighth street, New York City, with his wife for a Thanksgiving service.

Mr. March, a prominent lawyer, was graduated from Lafayette in 1892 and was a star athlete at college, having played football and baseball and was a captain of the 1891 football team.

After graduation from Lafayette, Mr. March studied law at the Columbia University Law School and upon completion of his course, became associated with the law firm of Alexander & Green, of New York City. In 1912, he gave up private practice to head the legal department of the Equitable Life Assurance Society and retired last year. He resided at 400 West End avenue, New York.

When he and his five brothers and one sister, all of whom became widely known in their fields, were growing up in their home on College Hill, the family breakfast table was daily turned over to a sort of an informal "Information Please," presided over by Prof. March, who was the author of March's Thesaurus Dictionary.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Katherine O'Connell March, Mr. March is survived by a son, Joseph Moncure March, a well known writer: two brothers, Gen. Peyton C. March, USA, retired, who was Chief of Staff during the first World War, and Prof. John Lewis March, retired head of the psychology department, Union College, and a sister, Miss Mildred March.

Three other brothers are dead. They were Alden March, an editor of The New York Times, Prof. Francis A. March, who for years occupied the same position at Lafayette as his father, and Dr. Thomas Stone March.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m., in the Second Presbyterian Church, 6 West 96th street, New York. Burial will be in Kensico cemetery, New York.
