Possible Birth, Baptism and Parentage

There is some uncertainty as to the identity of this man. The only man to have fathered a daughter in Aberdeenshire in the late 1600s is a William Annan. Notes copied from records found at the parish church in Leochel Cushnie indicated that the father of Elspet Annand, was a cadet of the ancient family of Auchter-Ellon. Records found in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, No 272, 4 July 1913 indicate that the name of Elspet's father was James but there are no parish records to support that presumption.

A question was asked through the pages of the Aberdeen Weekly Journal on 7 March 1913. The question and subsequent answer was reprinted in "The Aberdeen Journal, Notes and Queries",^[1][2] as follows:

"927. WILLIAM GRAY, CLOCHTOW OF SLAINS.— Gray married Elspet Annand, 1st Dec., 1709, and died 13th Feby., 1744. Tombstone gives age as 66, probably a mistake for 60. Is his parentage known in Buchan? I have a strong presumption that he was the second son of John Gray of Crichie, afterwards ninth Baron Gray, who died 10th Janry., 1723. / P.G."

An answer was provided on 4 July 1913,^[3] as follows:

"927. WILLIAM GRAY, CLOCHTOW OF SLAINS.— It was through his marriage with Elspet Annand, on 1st December 1709, that Gray arrived in Buchan, and settled in Clochtow. Elspet Annand was daughter and probably heiress of James Annand, of Auchterellon family. This James Annand was served heir to his nephew, Alexander Annand, second lawful son of Captain Robert Annand, in the lands and town of Old Clochtow, etc, 1st April 1668 ; and Gray by marrying Elspet would simply go into her house and possess the lands. / P.G."

Note made by Robert T. Gray 20 Jun 2020 - There are no Old Parish Records for an Elspet/Elizabeth Annan/Annand being born to a James Annan/Annans in the late 1600's so it is presumed that James was likely not Elspet fathers name and it was more likely William.

William married Christian Mill in Fyvie Parish, Aberdeenshire 23 Nov 1686. ^[4]
