Biography

Third Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca (1589-1621). Son of Martín Cortés de Zúñiga, Second Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, and of his first wife, Ana de Arellano (? -1578). He was born in Toledo on October 11, 1560. When his parents traveled to New Spain in 1562, he remained in the Peninsula under the care of Diego Ferrer. He married in 1593 with Mencía de la Cerda, daughter of Pedro Fernández de Cabrera and Bobadilla, II count of Chinchón, and Mencía de la Cerda. They had Gaspar Martín Cortés, who died child, so he follows the line and receives his title Pedro Cortés de Arellano (1565-1629) brother of Fernando. His death is recorded in the book of deaths of the Parish of San Pedro in Madrid on February 5, 1602, but it is possible that the registration was made a day after having occurred, as he granted a testament on the 4th, the same day in that his wife requested the execution of the inventory of goods. He should not be confused with his grandfather, Hernán Cortés, the Conquistador. .Hernan became the third Marques de Oaxaca thru his father; the "Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca" (Marquis of the Oaxaca Valley), a noble title and senorial estate which was passed down to his descendants until 1811.
