Biography

Mary Elizabeth Hick was born in 1899 in Lancashire, England. Her parents were William Hick and Sarah Ann Ebdon. Most of the family worked in a Cotton mill or factory.

She married Albert Flanagan, also from Lancashire, in 1920. Her father William appears to have died in late 1920 as well. Sarah and Albert would have been about 20 years old when they married. Albert had been wounded in World War I while serving in an Irish regiment (Royal Dublin Fusiliers) in Europe, and was an amputee. He was of small stature, with a height of 5 foot 2 inches.

Mary and Albert had their children in England. Her husband died in 1974 leaving her a widow.

She passed away in 1988 in New Zealand when she was 80 years old and was interred in Papakura Cemetery.
