John Booth was born about 1829 in Oldham, now part of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom. [1]
With the advent of steam-powered railways during his boyhood years John, perhaps understandably, became an engine driver, or engineer. With Manchester and the Midlands also becoming the hub of England's industrial might, there was certainly plenty of employment opportunity for young men. [1]
John married Betty Webster in 1856 in Burnley, about thirty kilometres north of Manchester. How Betty and John met is unknown, as her home town of Eastwood, Notinghamshire is some 135 kilometres (87 miles) from Burnley. Making their home initially in Manchester and moving to Rochdale, now also part of Greater Manchester, about 1865, the couple had seven sons and two daughters: [1]
John appears on the 1871 UK Census as the head of his family (as listed above), living at Blue Pike, Rochdale, Lancashire: [1]
