Major-General in Indian Army
Adam petitioned to join the United East-India Company in 1823. He was nominated by Richard C Plowden (a Director of the East-india Company) and recommended by General John Cuppage. He notes that he was educated at the Belfast Academical Institution and that his father is a gentleman residing in Lurgan, County Armagh Ireland and gives the place and date of his baptism - Shankhill, otherwise Lurgan 2 Feb 1808. Son of Alexander Cuppage of Lurgan and Anne his wife. His cadet papers were signed by his father - Alex Cuppage.[1]
Adam joined the East India Company Army, 27th Madras Native Infantry as a cadet in 1823.
14 May 1824 - Ensign
In 1825 he was the executor of the will of William Charles Cranston. who died in India. They were both in the 27th regiment Madras Native Infantry.
8 Sept 1826 - Lieutenant
In 1833 in Belfast, Ireland he married Caroline Frances Cranston the sister of William Charles Cranston.
15 February 1845 - Captain - Assist Resident, Singapore
13 Jan 1859 - Retired as Lieut-Colonel
16 Sept 1859 - Retirement on Full pay and given the Honorary rank of Major-General. [2]
28 July 1890. The Will of Adam Cuppage late of Gowrie Kingstown County Dublin Major-General who died 9 June 1890 at same place was proved at the Pricipal Registry by Mary E. A. Cuppage of Gowrie Widow one of the Executors. [329] Effects £4,547 9s. 2d. [4]
