Biography

Abt. 1570 Birth and Parentage

Elizabeth Bingley b. abt. 1570-1575 likely Donegal, Ireland d/o John Bingley and unknown mother.

Research Note

According to Burke's Irish Family Records (BIFR), she was the daughter of Sir Ralph Bingley, Knight of Rosguill, County Donegal, Ireland and an unnamed mother.^[1]

Researcher R. J. Hunter, determined that Sir Ralph was a likely descendent of John Bingley, the Earl of Derby's bailiff of the manor of Hawarden in 1474. His son Ralph b. abt. 1570 likely in Chester or Hawarden, Flint County, Wales and died 1627 in battle in France and was childless. He was a soldier for much of his adult life and acquired land in Northern Ireland in the early 1600s.^[2]

Given that he was a soldier for much of his adult life, it's understandable to assume he had no time for family and children. No birth year for Elizabeth was found but if she was his daughter, she would have been 15 years or so after 1570 when he was soldiering. It's more likely that she was a contemporary of his; likely a sister which would make her father John Bingley.

Her children were b. abt. 1590s (see next section) so she was b. abt. 1570.

Marriage and Children

Research Note

Given the college graduation dates for Andrew and John, these offspring were born abt. 1590s. Her husband Bishop Knox was born abt. 1559 in Renfrew, Renfrewshire, Scotland d. 17 Mar 1633 Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland. These facts again support Ralph being Elizabeth's contemporary; possibly a sister.^[2]

Private Bargain with Bishop Andrew Knox

Bishop Andrew Knox and Sir Ralph had a bond. Bishop Andrew made efforts to secure a military command for Sir Ralph, likely to protect the Bishop. The efforts were dismissed in 1611 by Chichester because they were perceived as a private bargain between the two men.^[2]
