George was born in 1853. He was the son of George Armstrong and Mary Cummerfield.
He married Mary Jane Gray, eldest daughter of Captain Robert Gray of the Wood, Nelson at Christ's Church, Nelson on 31 May 1879. The ceremony was conducted by Reverend J. Leighton.[1]
He helped his father farm at "Mount Vernon" station, Akaroa and after the death of his father, he and his wife took over the running of the station farming sheep.[2] George was elected Mayor of Akaroa and he held this position for 29 years.
He passed away in 1932, aged 79 and is buried at the Akaroa Cemetery, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand.
