Orlando was the son of Elijah and Jane Laraway.
He married Marian Eunice Batchelder.
He enlisted in the Union Army at Clyde, NY on July 30, 1862. He was 25 years old. He mustered in as private; 111th Inf, Co B on Aug 20, 1862. [1]
The 111th Infantry regiment left New York on August 21, 1862; served in the Middle Department, 8th Corps, from August 24, 1862; at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., where it was surrendered, in September, 1862; at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Ill., from September 28, 1862. [2] [3]
Camp Douglas was a prisoner of war camp for both Confederate soldiers and paroled Confederate prisoners (Union soldiers) who were awaiting a prisoner exchange. Due to the deplorable conditions, morale was low and desertions were common. [4]
Orlando escaped from Camp Douglas on October 2, 1862 (which was considered desertion).
Orlando is said to have drowned in Lake Erie. [5]
