I found a Meelia Talbert, age 9, in Cannon Co census in 1860, Permila J Tolbert, age 18, in Cannon Co, 1870 census, and a Permelia Arnold (m. to W.J. Arnold), age 30, in Cannon Co, 1880 census. 1

They probably took out a marriage license and then changed their minds about marrying. Or her parents wouldn't allow it. The bottom line being that they never did marry.
