From the Howe Genealogies: He enlisted in Co. G, 6th Mass. Regt., 15 April 1861, was appointed
Quarter Master Sergeant of the regiment. He was discharged
23 July 1861, to accept an appointment of the 1st Lt.
and Quarter Master of 15th Mass. Regt. Later he was commissioned
as Captain, and brevet Major, U. S. Vols., and was
assigned to duty as Ordnance Officer on the staff of Gen.
Charles P. Stone. Later he was senior Aide de Camp to
Gen. John Sedgwick. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam.
Va.; was made Provost Marshal of northern Maryland and West Va.,
with headquarters at Harper's Ferry, and
later he served on the staff of Gen. Sedgwick. He was in the
battles of Balls Bluff, Fair Oaks, Gaines Mill, Peach Orchard,
Savages Sta., Charles City Cross Road, Glendale, Malvern
Hill, second battle of Bull Run and Antietam. He was appointed
the first U. S. Marshal of Wyoming Ter., in 1869.
in 1871 he moved to Nebraska. He was a member of the
House and Senate for twenty four years; twice president of
the Senate; was a member of the State Board of Education
ten years ; delegate to the Republican National Convention in
1884, and a member of the Republican National Committee
1884-8. Commander of the Dept of Nebraska. He was appointed
U. S. Consul at Palerrno, Italy, July 1897-1900, at
Sheffield, Eng., 1900-3, Consul General at Antwerp, Belgium,
' 1903-6, at Montreal, 1906-13. He died 7 Oct. 1915. No
children.[4]
