Edward Walpole, esq. -- alias Edward Poor or Edward Rich -- (bp. 28 Jan 1559 - d.s.p 03 Nov 1637 London), was the son and heir of John Walpole and Catherine Calybut but disinherited in 1585 for being a Catholic sympathizer. This did not deter him and he apparently became a priest.
According to Blomefiled (1807) and Brydges (1812), he was attainted for treason and died traveling abroad,[1][2] but Venn's database claims that he died in London.[3]
Jessop (1899), concurrs that Edward died in London and explains the charge of treason by stating that, "The news of his receiving priest's orders at Rome was before long carried home by the spies who were watching him, and in 1597 he was outlawed ‘for a supposed treason done at Rome.’"
Edward was eventually pardoned in 1605, and died at the age of 78.
