Biography

C.C. McMillan was born in California around 1874.[1]

He came from a military family[2] and continued this tradition by joining the U.S. Navy on 8 Apr 1898.[3] He fought in the Spanish-American War and was listed on the Order of the Native Sons Roll of Honor in the San Francisco Chronicle.[4] He switched branches to join the U.S. Coast Guard in 1902, and by 1903 was an engineer aboard the steam ship McCulloch based out of San Francisco. [5]

By 1906, C. C. was a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard and stationed in San Francisco. After the earthquake that destroyed large parts of the city, it was reported by the Santa Cruz Weekly Sentinel newspaper that he was responsible for single-handedly saving the entire art collection housed in the Hopkins Mansion, a building owned by the California School of Design and the San Francisco Art Association. After being warned that the fire was moving toward the mansion, he used his revolver to conscript passersby into a rescue mission to move every piece of art out of the mansion. In two hours, they had successfully saved all of the paintings, books, flags, and statues that had been inside. [6]

On 23 August 1915, C. C. married Ella Mason, the daughter of Danish immigrants, in Everett, Washington.[7] They lived mainly in Burlingame, California, though they also relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, and New York during C.C.'s military career. They had several daughters together.[8]

C.C. retired from the Coast Guard in 1938, after 36 years of service.[9]
