I at first got the (mistaken?) idea that his name was Perry Jeptha Wolfe. I don't remember the source. Then I believed him to have been the victim of an ambush while crossing a creek on horseback, a documented incident, but a different Jep: the dates won't work. " Jep Wolfe" seems to have been a pretty common name at one time in east Tennessee. MY Jep's daughter Troy applied for a "late birth certificate" in 1956, assisted by another daughter, Minnie, and he signed the application "Jeptha A. Wolfe," so that is the name I will use for now.
