From the History of the counties of Albany and Schenectady, by Professor Howell Tenny, John Bryant commenced the manufacturing of bricks - the first ever made in Albany - in the year 1708 [ editorial - which is incorrect, it had to have been after 1760, since that is cited as John's birth year, so the manufacturing was more likely 1798 ], and continued it for thirty-five years. This was called Bryant's Business." Bricks were then sold by the pound. Later, two hundred men were employed, and he was considered the largest manufacturer of bricks in the State. He was succeeded in the business by his son-in-law, Hon. Angus McDuffie [married to Sarah]. 1
