Rose was born in 1850 in London.
She emigrated to New Zealand.
She passed away in 1912 when she was 62 years old. Her burial record (Otahuhu Cemetery) states:
Her headstone reads: Sacred to the memory of Rose Edwards, died 13th Oct 1912, and who for 20 years taught in the Sunday School at Holy Trinity Church, Otahuhu. A faithful follower of Christ.
The reference to Little Sisters, in Ponsonby, gave rise to speculation that she may have been a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor, however this was a Catholic order, and Rose was Anglican. However, she may have been a resident (receiving aged care) rather than a sister. In June, 1888, two Little Sisters arrived in Auckland to search for a suitable house. With the assistance of Bishop Luck and a benefactor, Mr. Darby, they found a house in Hepburn Street, Ponsonby. The Sisters transferred to a new, larger, property in Herne Bay in 1889, however at the time the Shelley Beach Road property was still often referred to as being situated in Ponsonby. The order was apparently founded in 1840 and its object was to provide homes and care for the elderly (both sexes) irrespective of religion. See THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR., Auckland Star, Volume XXIII, Issue 146, 21 June 1892.
