Biography

John Emil Hedberg was born in Sweden on December 9 ,1877-1879.

He immigrated some time 1880-1882, so he must have come to America with his family.

He passed away on April 3, 1965, and is buried in Kuna Cemetery in Kuna, Ada County, Idaho, USA.[1][2]

Idaho Free Press, Monday, April 5, 1965, Nampa, Idaho:

Services for John Emil Hedberg, 86, Route 2, Kuna, Ida., who died Sat., April 3, 1965, at his home, will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Robison Chapel of the Chimes, Meridian, Ida. The Rev. A. M. Thomas of the Meridian First Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be at the Kuna Cemetery.
Mr. Hedberg was born at Dollerna, Sweden, on Dec. 9, 1879, and married Nettie Jane Van Aller at Holdredge, Neb. on Feb. 17, 1904. She died Feb. 9, 1965.
He came to the U. S. in 1886 and moved to the Boise Valley in 1907. He was a Kuna resident since 1919.
Survivors include three sons, Ray Hedberg, of Seattle Wash., Lester Hedberg, of Boise, Ida., and Lloyd Hedberg, of Kuna; two daughters, Mrs. George Bambauer,Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Frank Lee, of Boise; a half-brother, Clarence Swedell, of Miniatare, Neb., three half-sisters, Mrs. Lulu Crawford, of Rawlins, Wyo., Mrs. Sadie Matzke, of Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. Maybelle Hopkins, of Holdredge, Neb.; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Research notes

All US sources states he was born on December 9, but there are three different years to consider:

  • 9 Dec 1879 according to his WW1 Draft Registration card
  • 9 Dec 1878 "at Dollerna, Sweden" according to his obituary published in Idaho Free Press, Monday, April 5, 1965, Nampa, Idaho (see clip and transcript at Find-a-grave)
  • 9 Dec 1877 according to his WW2 Draft Registation card.

Dollerna (not Dollerina, the transcripts is wrong) sound like it might be Dalarna in Swedish.

His half brother Clarence Swedell in Nebraska should be on this mother's side, otherwise Clarence's last name ought to be Hedberg as well. If we find Clarences mother, we find John Emil's.

There is a Clarance Swedell in Scots bluff in Nebraska. Miniatare is indeed a city in Scotts Bluff. He was born 1897/1898 to Swedish patents and have sisters Mable and Lulu according to to the 1900 Census.[3] Mable and Lulu were also mentioned as John Emil's half sisters.
