Louis George “Murphy” Chelekis was born May 1, 1886 in Zoupena, Sparta, Greece. He was the son of George and Yianoula (Benekos) Chelekis. [1]
When Louis came to the United States, he first settled in the area of Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where his brothers Thomas and Christ also settled. In September 1911, he became a citizen of the United States. [2]
Louis arrived in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York from Pennsylvania in 1912 and purchased a pool room on Tioga Street which he operated until 1959. When he registered for the World War I draft he was described as short and slender with brown eyes and black hair. [3]
He married Iphigenia “Lottie” (Brinsmaid) Deuel on August 20, 1918 in Niagara Falls, Welland, Ontario, Canada. In addition to Lottie’s son, Robert Deuel , from her first marriage, the couple raised two adopted children: George and Anne Chelekis. [4] [5] [6]
When Louis registered for the draft in 1942, he was described as 5’6” tall, 165 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. [7]
Louis Chelekis died April 26, 1974 in Ithaca, New York. [8] He is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Ithaca. [9]
