Joseph B. Shields was born about 1790 in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky, a son of David W. Shields (1766-1843). He married Sarah Adaline Masterson (1794-1878) in 1816; they had seven known children. Joseph died April 5, 1841 and was buried at Allens Creek Cemetery, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

His distant cousin married Sarah Adline. Joseph B. Shields' brothers were involved in a murder in Paris, KY in 1824. The older brother Robert was killed by the family of the man he and his brother D.W. Shields murdered. Once D.W. Shields' father died in 1841 he decided to let people think he was a son of the distant cousin born in 1785. the family did not want to be known as the murderers from Paris
