James was born in 1767, the son of David and Bethiah (Newcomb) Raymond. His father passed in 1771 and his mother remarried in 1773 to Deacon Nathaniel Gray. James married to Melissa Burritt, daughter of the Reverend Blackleach Burritt. James was one of the earliest pioneers of Sherburne, New York, where he settled in 1792-3. He passed away in 1852, widowed, and living with his grandson James P. Raymond in Venango County, Pennsylvania.
