Birth

Ozro Jennison Livermore was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, on 6 Jan 1840, the son of Charles Grandison Livermore and Eliza Emily (Jennison) Livermore.[1] (See the Research Note below for a discussion of his birthplace.) He was living with his parents at Alstead in 1850 at the age of 10[2] and at Walpole, New Hampshire, in 1860 at the age of 20.[3]

Marriage

Ozro J. Livermore, 24, clerk, and Angenette "Nettie" Hall, 19, both of Worcester, Massachusetts, married there on 2 Jan 1865.[1][4]

Biographical Details

Military Service

Ozro J. Livermore, served briefly in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Then of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he mustered into Company A of the 53rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment on 17 Oct 1862, and was mustered out on account of disability on 15 Jan 1863,[1] before the regiment sailed for duty on the Gulf Coast.

Residences and Occupations

In 1861, Ozro J. Livermore was living at Fitchburg, Massachusetts, working as a clerk at Sprague & Co,, and boarding at the Rollstone house.[5]
In 1865, Ozro J. Livermore, 25, clerk, born in New Hampshire, and Nettie Livermore, 19, born in Massachusetts, were living at Worcester, Massachusetts, living in the househoid of Mrs. M. N. Fales, presumably as boarders.[6]
In 1872, Ozro J. Livermore of 65 Vernon Street in Springfield, Massachusetts, was listed in the city dirctory as one of the partners in Livermore, Ball & Co., crockery dealers of that city.[7] The 1902 Livermore genealogy says that Ozro was a crockery dealer in Springfield until 1881 when they moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts, but city direstories show that by 1877, the family had returned to Worcester, and Ozro was working as a clerk.[8]
By 1882, the family had moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts, where Ozro was working as a superindent for a furniture company.[9] In 1900, the family was living at Holyoke and included Ozro J. Livermore, born January 1840, merchant; Angenette Livermore, born in May 1845, his wife; Arthur C. Livermore, born in May 1874, civil engineer; and a Frank Stockdale, born in August 1874, draftsman, listed as a son, but with the different lastr name, a birth date just three months after Arthur's, and the birthplace of his father recorded as Illinois was clearly not a natural son.[10]
In 1910, the household at Holyoke included Ozro J. Livermore, 70, furniture store proprietor; Jennet Livermore, 64, his wife; Arthur Livermore, 35, mechanical engineer, listed as the head of his family; Bertha Livermore, 32, his wife; and their two sons, Clifford Livermore, 3, and Norman Livermore, 16 months.[11]

Children

Ozro and Angenette (Hall) Livermore were the parents of two sons, both born at Springfield, Massachusetts:[1]
  1. Charles D. Livermore, born on 12 Aug 1870
  2. Arthur C. Livermore, born on 19 May 1874

Death

Ozro J. Livermore, retired merchant of 19 Lenox Street in Springfield, Massachusetts, died on 27 Jun 1917 at the Sumner Avenue railroad crossing in Springfield from a combination of injuries, including a fracture of his skull and face, as a result of being struck by a train at the crossing. and he was buried three days later at the Hope Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts.[12] The FindAGrave memorial of Ozro J. Livermore includes this transcription from the Boston Herald of 28 Jun 1917:
Train Kills Husband and Wife in Motor
Springfield, June 27 -- Mr. and Mrs. Ozro J. Livermore of this city were killed when the automobile they were riding in was struck by a New Haven railroad train on a grade crossing early this evening. The victims, both well over 70, were returning home after visiting Charles D. Livermore of 16 Blair street, Worcester, a son. They were planning a reception to another son, Arthur H. Livermore of Pittsburgh, Pa., who is en route to Springfield to get a new touring car, a gift from his parents. It was this car which they were in and which was wrecked.
The gravestone of Ozro J. Livermore at the Hope Cemetery is inscribed with the dates 6 Jan 1840 and 27 Jun 1917.[13]

Research Note

The death record of Ozro J. Livermore, for which the biographical information was provided by Ozro's son Charles D. Livermore. says that Ozro was born at Walpole, New Hampshire,[12] a claim repeated without citation of evidence on his FindAGrave memorial,[13] but likely based on the death record. The 1902 Livermore genealogy, howver, says that all of Charles Grandison Livermore's children were born at Alstead, New Hampshire.[1] In 1840, the census (taken as of 1 Jun 1840) enumerated Charles G. Livermore at Alstead, and his family included a male child under the age of 5,[14] who was probably Ozro. The family was still living at Alstead in 1850, with Ozro listed as a child of 10.[2] By 1860, the family had moved to the adjacent town of Walpole, and Ozro is shown living with his parents there at the age of 20.[3] Charles was apparently under the impression that his father had been born at Walpole, but the weight of the evidence argues strongly that he was born at Alstead.
