Biography

Horace Barber was born 24 March 1804 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, the son of Oliver and Nancy Barber. ^[1]

Horace Barber, a Sherborn resident, and Miss Emeline Perry were married on 5 April 1832 in Sherborn, Norfolk, Massachusetts. The Reverend Samuel Lee, of Sherborn, minister of the Gospel, officiated. The marriage was registered in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts. ^[2]

In 1850, the Barber family lived on their farm in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts. All members of the family were born in Massachusetts. The household included Horace Barber, 46, a farmer, who held $3550 in real estate value; his wife, Emeline, 40; their four daughters, all in school, Abigail P., 16; Mary E., 12; Harriet A., 10; and Ellen L., 8; and Submit Perry, 63 [the mother of Emeline (Perry) Barber]. Living nearby was (Horace’s brother), Oliver Barber, 49, a farmer, b. MA, with $4500 in real estate. ^[3]

Emeline Barber died in 1852.

Horace and Emeline Barber are mentioned in the marriage record of their daughter, Abby P. Barber, 23, who married G.C. Morse, 30, a clergyman, on 8 September 1857 in Sherborn, Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts. It was the first marriage for both. Clergyman E. Dorsie officiated. G.C. Morse was the son of Loring and Mary Morse. ^[4] Abby’s husband, Grosvenor Clark Morse (1827 NH-1870 Kansas) was the son of Lorenzo Morse (1900-1884) and Mary Dwinnell (1800-1880). G.C. and Abigail had four children, Everett D. (1858-1858); Park L. (1860-1946); Carrie C. (1864-1899); and Irving H. (b. 1868). ^[5]

In 1875, the Barber family lived in Emporia Township, Lyon County, Kansas. All members of the household were born in Massachusetts, except as noted. The family included Horace Barber, 71, with $260 in real estate and $2153 in personal estate; Hattie, 34 (daughter Harriet); (Mrs.) A.P. Morse (daughter Abigail), with $1040 in real estate and $151 in personal estate; (her children, all born in Kansas) Park Morse, 14; Carrie, 9; and Ervin, 7. ^[6]

Horace Barber was born in 1804 in Sherborn, Massachusetts, the son of Oliver (1763-1814) and Nancy (Bullard) (1768-1823) Barber. Horace married Emeline Perry on 5 April 1832 in Middlesex, Massachusetts. He died in Kansas in 1885 at age 81, and is buried with daughters Harriet (1840-1925) and Abigail Morse (1833-1925) at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, Lyon, Kansas. ^[7] Horace’s wife and daughter, Ellen are buried at Plain Burial Ground, Sherborn, Massachusetts. His parents are buried at South Sherborn Cemetery, Sherborn.
