James Turnbow married Caroline Graves. They had three children: John Isaac Turnbow, Melissa "Lissey" Turnbow Haley and Caroline, who may have died as a child. Jim served as a private in the Confederate Army, along with his brother Andrew who was engaged to Caroline's sister. They were in Voorhies 48th Tennessee Infantry and later in Nixon's. Andrew died during the war. Jim told of sleeping outdoors during the war and being thankful for a snowfall, because the snow added some insulation for warmth. He was captured and sent to the notorious Camp Douglas prison camp, before being exchanged. The family did not hear from him for two years. He returned near the end of the war. Caroline was weeding the field when she saw him walking down the road toward home. She threw down her hoe and ran to meet him. They said the war took something out of him. Later in life he wore sideburns known as mutton chops and they called him "Uncle Mutton."
