Johann Gottfried (Gottfried) Hoffman was born on 19 August 1804 in Krummendorf, Züllichau-Schwiebus, Brandenburg, Prussia, the son of Johann Friedrich Hoffmann and Johanne Maria Korber and the brother of Johanne Luise Hoffmann.
He married Johanne Eleonore (Eleonore) Rinnert in about 1831 in Krummendorf, Brandenburg, Prussia and their children Johann Friedrich Hoffmann and Johanne Luise Hoffmann were born before the family left for Australia in 1838.
Gottfried and Eleonore, with their two young children, sailed out of Hamburg aboard the baque, the "Prince George" on 8 July 1838, via Plymouth, England and eventually arrived, four months and ten days later, at Holdfast Bay, South Australia, Australia on 18 November 1838 and then at Port Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on 20 or 21 November 1838. Travelling on the same ship, were parents and sister Johanne Luise,
It is thought that the family disembarked at Holdfast Bay, South Australia, Australia [1][2][3][4].
Sadly, Gottfried's father died on 10 October 1838, 6 weeks and 4 days before making landfall at South Australia, Australia and was buried at sea [3]. It is also thought that his mother may have died on 18 November 1838, the day the ship arrived at Holdfast Bay, South Australia, Australia.
From their arrival in South Australia, there is no further mention of their two children, 5 year old Johann and 3 year old Johanne, and it is thought that both of them either died on board the vessel or died soon after arriving amd some family trees have them dying in 1838. Some time after arriving in South Australia, Gottfried and Eleonore had two more sons, Johann Gottlieb (Gottlieb) Hoffmann in 1847 and Johann Hermann Hoffmann in 1854.
Gottfried died on 8 February 1885 at Frewville, Near Greenock, South Australia, Australia [5] and he was buried in the Zum Schmalen Weg Lutheran Cemetery, Naine, South Australia, Australia [6].
