Josiah Robert was born in Orange, Massachusetts, in 1846, the son of Solomon Adams and Ruth (Barnes) Howe.[1] The family moved to Malden, Mass., by 1860, where his father was a master carpenter and his brother William was a carpenter’s apprentice.[2] Josiah later went into the carpentry trade as well.
When he was 18 years old, he enlisted to serve in the Civil War, on August 20, 1862. He mustered in as a Private in Company B of the Massachusetts 13th Infantry. He was later promoted to Corporal. He was discharged at Washington, D.C. in February, 1863. He re-enlisted the following year, in Company C of the Massachusetts 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment, on August 25, 1864. He was discharged on June 17, 1865.
After the war, he returned to Malden. He married Anna Harris, daughter of James and Abbie Harris, in 1868.[3] They had 4 children. Josiah worked as a police officer (1880) and later was a conductor and assistant station manager for the Boston & Maine Railroad. He also was employed as an attendance officer for the city of Malden.
Josiah died in 1917. He was buried at the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.[4]
