Biography

John James Dale was born in 1880 in New Seaham, Durham, England to George Dale and Susan (Johnson) Dale.

In 1881 John James Dale (age 0) lived at Henry St in Seaham with his father George (21, Coal Miner) and mother Susannah (18).[1]

John and his family immigrated to the United States in 1883. George Dale (20), Susan Dale (20), John Dale (3), and Isabella Dale (7 months) sailed aboard the SS Celtic from Liverpool to New York, arriving in July of 1883.[2]

In 1900 John Dale (age 19) lived in Elmoro Precinct 16, Las Animas County, Colorado.[3] His widowed mother and siblings lived nearby: Susan Dale (36) with Annie (17), Lily (13), and George (6) - based on the birth places of his siblings, it seems the family lived in New Mexico and then Illinois before settling in Colorado.

John Dale married Eugenia "Jennie" Durand on 4 Mar 1902 in Trinidad, Las Animas County.[4]

In 1910 John Dale (age 29, Engineer) lived in Bowen Precinct 22, Las Animas County with his wife Jennie (25) and three daughters: Sylvia M (7), Fannie (4), and Georgia L (2), as well as ten boarders (mostly coal miners).[5]

[The 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses all list John's place of birth as Illinois - otherwise, the details all match with the above.]

In 1920 John J Dale (age 38, Coal Miner) lived in Cokedale, Las Animas County with his wife Jennie (34) and five children: Sylvia (17), Frances (14), Georgia Nell (12), Eugenia A (8), and John H (5).[6]

In 1930 John Dale (age 49, Foreman at Coal Mine) lived in Broadhead, Las Animas County with his wife Jennie (45) and three children: Jean (18), John (16, Laborer at Coal Mine), and Betty (4).[7]

In 1940 John Dale Sr (age 59, Coal Miner) lived in Lafayette, Boulder County, Colorado with his wife Jennie (54) and daughter Betty Lou (14).[8] His son John Dale Jr lived nearby.

John Dale passed away in 1948. He is buried at Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad.[9]
