Biography

Abel Acácio de Almeida Botelho was born on the 23rd of September 1854 in Tabuaço, Portugal. He was the son of Luiz Carlos d’Almeida Botelho and D. Maria Preciosa d’Azevedo Botelho.

Abel was a military officer, a diplomat, and a writer (exponent of Portuguese Naturalism).

  • Maternal grandson of Bento d’Azevedo Leitão and of D. Maria Bernarda
  • In 1911 Abel took part in approving the plans for what would become the current flag of Portugal: "green represents hope and red the blood shed by the people in the many wars fought" [1]
  • Abel represented the new Portuguese republic to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he died in 1917.
