About Peter Eriksen Noræus Fjellström[1] SILBOJOCK Incumbent No. 4

Petrus Noræus Fjellström (1698-1706), born on October 4, 1657 in Silbojock, was the son of his predecessor. He began studies in Uppsala on March 31, 1677. According to the academic consistory protocol of August 22, 1678, "the Lapp" Petrus Noræus requested further assistance, as he could not subsist on the simple stipend that he had. His Excellency, the University Chancellor, deemed it not only just but also essential to help him, so that he might later be able to build up the congregation in that area, wishing that he might receive an additional simple stipend. He was ordained as an assistant to his father in 1682 and became his successor as the parish priest in 1697, and was introduced on January 29 the following year.

Like his father, he was known for his zeal in eradicating the Lapps' pagan customs, but often acted with unnecessary harshness and insensitivity. Illustrative of this is a letter he sent to Superintendent M. Steuchius, dated Piteå, November 24, 1686. As his father's assistant priest, he had undertaken a journey in the mountains and reported that the Lapps belonging to Silbojock had generally abandoned paganism, but that many idolaters still existed in adjacent parishes. During the trip, which he took with three Lapps (one a bailiff and one a quarterman), they visited a nomadic Lapp named Erik Eskilsson from Umeå rural parish. When neither admonitions nor threats had any effect, Mr. Per destroyed the Lapp's idol altar and took his divination drum. On the return journey, the priest was caught up by the Lapp and a couple of like-minded companions, who forcibly took back the magic drum.

Fjellström also mentioned another Lapp, Anund Thorsson from Turpenjaur, who openly declared he would never abandon his pagan ancestors' faith, concluding his letter thus: "If these two hardened people continue to live, let no priest be among the Lapps or any word of God, for they lead the others astray; it would therefore be desirable for the weeds to be cleared before the harvest time."¹ At the February court of 1687, Erik Eskilsson was tried and fined heavily, and at the following year's court, he promised before the panel and three present Lapland priests to abandon his idolatry. A harsher fate befell another Lapp, Lars Nilsson from Norrvästerbyn, who was sentenced to death for adhering to his idolatrous beliefs and, after Christian preparation by Fjellström in the spring of 1693, suffered his punishment (for more on this, see Bromé., cited work, pp. 194-198). The parish priest died on May 15, 1706.

Per Fjellström married Agatha Læstadia 13 February 1683. They had 13 children. Agatha Læstadia died 12 June 1748.[2]

G. 13/2 1683 m Agatha Læstadia, born in Arjeplog 4/10 1667, the daughter of Lieutenant on February khden. John N. Læstadius N. 3rd With her had Fjellström 18 children. She died after 42 years of widowhood in Kalajoki (Ostrobothnia) 12/6 in 1748. Her efterlefvande counted to almost 150 people. A couple of verses from a poem graph at his death were as follows:

In the wilderness lemnad abideth But He who grace its propagates without it underground support and their never öfverger, A alone, whom fate drifts He ate a soul now grace prepares, from estates and homes, from house and hearth, A Hagar UTI desert looks; For children three times six a mother, a mother with her children in the desert Wisst gutos this out tårefloder.
