Biography

No specific sourcing seen in either pre-merge profile for birth or death. Marriage record for William "Butler" and Ann Wilson 12 Feb 1592/93 at All Saints, Willian, Hertfordshire, NOT at Watton-at-Stone although they are only about 10 miles apart. Name is spelled Butler at Hertfordshire County Council searchable database [1] and at freereg.org.uk, search for "Butler" or "Boteler" in Herts. county.[2]

The name "Boteler" appears many times in searches of Watton parish registers at familysearch[3] although they may be for a related family. The name "Butler" also appears.

Neither name comes up in a search of FHL film 991342 for Willian parish registers but the separate marriage register is not searchable, only viewable on site at a Family History Center. Both names should probably be considered valid.

A WIlliam Butler son of William Butler was baptized 17 Nov 1605 at Ware, about 6 miles from Watton which could have been a son or grandson of this profile.[4]

Original biography said William was born in 1544. He passed away in 1633 (neither date sourced).

Other family-tree and familysearch sources included were not valid or had no primary source including myheritage.com.

The name "John Boteler of Watton" does appear on page 33 of "The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire" [5] on a list of the wealthier men of the Hundred of Hertfordshire and again as the knight "Sir John Boteler" who served in Parliament during the reign of Queen Mary (1553-1558). Various entries for "Boteler" appear in this book in Watton so that certainly seems to be a valid last name. However, the name "Butler" also appears in this book with respect to Sir John, Knight.

Given that the only written record that is apparently proven to relate to this specific William is his marriage to Ann Wilson and that is transcribed as "Butler" at Hertfordshire Council this merge is being completed under "Butler".

Completed the merge as "Butler", see profile for sourcing. Both names were in use in Hertfordshire at the time and per the Chauncy book, both may have referred to the same family of Watton, Willian and possibly Ware.

This is the correct father, however, his birth information is wrong. It needs to be changed to 1554, in Hertfordshire, England. Sources can be found here {https://www.myheritage.com/names/anne_boteler}

I do not have pre 1500 clearance, so I can not change it. Please do. Thank you.
