Sylva was born Mary Sylva Crosby on March 23, 1914, to Bill and Bertha Crosby in Perry County, Tennessee. A descendant of a Revolutionary War Veteran, she was the eldest of four children. She grew up and attended school in Perry and Decatur Counties. Married to E.G. Byrd, also of Perry County, she became a homemaker and helpmate to E.G., a general contractor. Sylva lived in Fresno for 68 years, raised three children and was a member of The Church of Christ. She is survived by son, Tom Byrd; daughters, Jane Knee and her husband Jan, and Terell Byrd; grand-children, Jason and Kathy Knee, Justin and Evelia Knee, and Jana and Kit Blancaflor; six great-grandchildren, and nephew and cousin, Monte Byrd and his wife JoAnn , all of Fresno. She is also survived by her brother, Marvin Crosby and his wife Mary; sisters, Wilda King and Julia McMurry of Parsons, Tennessee; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends. A Graveside Service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. Remembrances may be made to Northwest Church of Christ, 4150 N. Polk, Fresno, Ca. 93722.
