Biography

Matthew Burns has Irish ancestors.

Matthew was born on 21 Jul 1866 in Falls Creek, Jefferson County, to Patrick and Mary Whalen Burns. He grew up in the mining region of Barclay Mountain in Bradford County.

Throughout his life, he was employed as a miner, a railroad clerk, and as a city alderman. He moved to Bradford after he became employed by the Erie Rail Road. He worked in the front house, and later transferred to railroad switching. After a year on the job, he was injured in a railroad accident and had his right arm amputated.

In 1910, he became a trainmaster's clerk, a position which he held until 1929, when he retired from active railroad work due to ill health.

In the fall of the same year, he was elected an alderman of the Fifth ward. Due to the results of the election being contested, he did not take office until 1 Mar 1930, two months after he should have.

He was extremely active in fraternal organizations. He was a member of the A.O.H., Knights of Columbus, Modern Woodmen of America, Royal Neighbors of America, and a member of the Erie Railroad Veterans' Association, due to his 25 years of service.

On 21 May 1889 in Towanda, he married Anna Alice Farrell, the daughter of Peter and Mary Ann North Farrell, of Albany Township. They had seven children, including a stillborn daughter, who died in 1907.

He died in Bradford, McKean County, of chronic myocarditis and hypotension on 10 Jul 1933 after being confined to his bed for four weeks. He was buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Bradford.
