Biography

Clara died 2 days after giving birth to a male stillborn child

The entire community of Conway mourns the loss of Mrs Clara Germaine Ackle, who died Saturday morning about 8 o'clock, aged 33 years 4 months. She was the youngest daughter and seventh child of Gideon and Elmire Cormier Germaine, and had been born in Randolf, Vt. Her family removed to Conway in 1871, where Clara at an early age became the book-keeper of Billings & Eldridge, who had kept a general store at Burkville. Her excellent business qualifications insured her success, and she later went into the employ of E. H. Bell of Northampton, where she remained two years. Her aged parents then required her presence at home, and she returned to Conway. While she was in Northampton, a prize for the most popular saleswoman in the city, was awarded to her by a vote of the public. When again able to enter business she became the manager of the dry goods department of Delaware Bros. in Conway, where she remained as long as this firm held the business, again retiring to care for family friends. Here also she was invaluable to her employers by her business skill and what may be truthfully be called a rare personal address. She was one of the most womanly of woman; of high principle and fine personality; and no one in town was more highly and universally held in esteem. She was devoted to her family, friends and was very self-sacrificing. She was one of the mainstays of the Conway Catholic church, especially in her work there for the children. She was married July 2, 1901, to Edward Ackle, a native of Switzerland, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt by the whole community. Their child, dead at birth on Friday, will be buried with its mother at Howland cemetery, Conway, the funeral taking place at the Catholic church this morning at 10 o'clock. Besides her husband, Mrs Ackle leaves two sisters - Mrs Edward Reinhardt of Lewiston, Me., and Mrs Herman Reinhardt of Wales; and three brothers Rudolph, Ulrich, and Henry Germain all living in Conway. Two married sisters of this family have previously died.
