Charles Duncombe, son of Alexander Duncombe of Drayton Beauchamp in Buckinghamshire and his wife, Mary Pawley, was baptised at Whitchurch on the 16th of November 1648.[1] [2]
He was first returned to Parliament in 1685 as member for Hedon in Yorkshire, presenting the corporation with a silver flagon and the parish church with four new bells [3] and in 1690 found a seat at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. [4] Charles had to look elsewhere in 1695 and was returned for Downton [5] while in 1701 it was Ipswich. [6] From 1702 he was returned for Downton until his death. [1]
On the 20th of October 1699 he was knighted in the bedchamber at Kensington, [7][2] then the rural residence of the King, William III. [8]
Charles was chosen as Lord Mayor of London in 1708.[1]
He passed away unmarried on the 9th of April 1711 [1] at Teddington and was buried at Downton. [2]
