May Waring married a Peggy (of unknown maiden surname).
Research Notes
An amendment to the 1739 Negro Act in South Carolina in the early 19th century "prohibited teaching slaves to read and write, punishable by a fine of 100 pounds and six months in prison." [1] Further research needed to determine his status prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, but I have not yet found any evidence of any free persons of color in Colleton County in 1860.
Long after May was passed his school years, South Carolina was the last state in the United States to officially desegregate their schools. [2]
