He was Intelligence Officer in Rimington's Corps of Guides during the Boer War 1899-1902.
In 1916 He was Assistant Director of Works, 1916-17, and chief engineer, 1917-18. He served in France during World War I with the Royal Engineers. He retired with the rank of Brigadier-General.
He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George.
After in 1919 retiring he moved to Vancouver, Canada where his neighbor was Charles Colville, who married his daughter Kathleen after his death.[3]
He passed away in 1930. He is buried in the Churchyard of St. Stephen's, Mount Newton.
