James arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1859 by the clipper ship Lightning. With friends he went gold mining at several gold fields with varied success.
He arrived at Dunedin, New Zealand on 5 March, 1862 to continue prospecting at Dunstan. He then travelled to the West Coast via Lyttelton, and a very long walk, arriving at Hokitika on 10 March, 1865.
He, and his wife, lost a daughter at nine years old.[1]
In 1903 he was appointed Inspector of Factories and Labour Agent on the West Coast.
There are no descendants if this family in NZ as none of the children had children or even married.
This family group are the only Isdell's on NZ BDM EXCEPT for one death :1893/6565 Isdell L'Estrange 36Y which id Dr Lestrange Isdell[2]
