Biography

On 19 Aug 1867, when William was 28 years old, he enlisted in the Army in Evansville, Indiana. He was assigned to "4 Arty" Co's D & H[1]. On 13 April 1869, he was discharged "for insanity" and sent to "Insane Asylum near Washington, DC".[2]
In 1880, William is living in the Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna, Union County, Illinois. He is single; his occupation is given as "farmer." It appears that he never regained his mental health and was still living in this facility in 1910. It is likely that he died here in 1917.[3][4][5]
