Biography
A son named Rawlins Lowndes was registered twice by these parents. The first, Rawlins Lowndes (28 May 1789 - October 1800), died as a boy. This page concerns his parents' second son named Rawlins Lowndes, born September 1801. The name "Rawlins Lowndes" was of particular importance for the Lowndes family because of the public eminence achieved by President/Governor Rawlins Lowndes (1720-1800), a forceful and sagacious leader of the patriots during the Revolutionary War in the 1770s and, thereafter, a resolute defender of southern interests. The historical footprint of President Rawlins Lowndes endured among mainstream southern scholars through the nineteenth century and beyond, though through the intensifying polarisation surrounding the fratricidal slaughter of the early 1860s, the name of Rawlins Lowndes became increasingly forgettable among the east coast establishment further to the north

Plantations
Rawlins Lowndes owned the Wicklow Hall Plantation, located on the North Santee in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Acquired about 1831[1] with his brothers, Rawlins is said to have become sole owner by 1843.[2] By 1867 S. D. Doar was the probable manager of "Wicklow". He signed a labor contract with freedmen to work on the Wicklow Plantation.[3]
