Her father, Captain George Grant of the 2nd Royal Scots Regiment, died during the siege and capture of Havana in 1762-3. She was a kinswoman (probably a niece) of Major General James Grant, Governor of East Florida from 1763 to 1771 and commander of the 55th Regiment of Foot during the American War of Independence.
Her mother died a few days after her birth and she was brought up in Dublin by Mrs Morgan Crofton (née Jeanne D'Abzac), wife of Mr (later Sir, 1st Bt.) Morgan Crofton. She married Henry Arabin in 1781and bore him nine sons, none of whom had any surviving legitimate male offspring. She died in 1839 and was buried in the family vault at Moyglare, County Westmeath, Ireland.
