James (Duff) Duff First Baronet of Halkin was born in Scotland.
  • Sir James Duff, 1st Baronet, Consul at Cadiz, was the eldest son of William Duff of Crombie and Elizabeth Dalrymple. [1] [2]
  • He was born in Scotland in 1734, and was shipping Sherry from Cadiz from 1768 as quite a young man. Duff was a generous man, and an enormous help to Thomas Osborne (1761-1845), advising and supplying wine initially and giving him storage for his own wine. [The Osborne group eventually purchased Duff Gordon]. [3]
  • He never married; however, he took on his nephew William Gordon (1772-1823), son of his sister Anne Duff and Alexander Gordon (of Aberdeenshire, the judge Lord Rockville), as a partner and inheritor in 1788. The firm was re-named Duff Gordon & Co.
  • On the 3rd of April 1790, Duff was appointed British Consul in Cadiz, a position he retained till his death.
  • He was created 1st Baronet Duff, of Halkin, co. Ayr [U.K.] on 12 November 1813, with special remainder to his nephew, William Duff. [4] [5][6]
  • His death notice in The Hull Packet and East Riding Times : At Port St. Mary's, in Spain, on the 20th of November, in his 82nd year, Sir James Duff, Bart, his Majesty's Consul at Cadiz. [7]
