Frank was born on November 10,1851 in Windsor, Berkshire, Massachusetts. He is the son of William Bender and Sylvina Dunham. [1] Frank was the sixth child born to William and Sylvina and the last of their children born in Massachusetts. As a small child, Frank moved to Marion, Wisconsin with his family sometime before his younger brother, Edgar, was born in 1858. [2] Frank seemed to go by Darius when he was a child, however in documents when he is older, he does go by his first name of Frank. In 1865 and 1870, Frank is living at home on the family farm in Kalmar, Olmsted, Minnesota. [3][4]
On November 18, 1883, Frank married Rena Gilbertson in Butternut Valley, Blue Earth, Minnesota. The couple was married by a Justice of the Peace, Charles H. Shhelby, and their witnesses were Claire Solbery and Betsey C. Johnson.[5] The couple had four children: Unknown Daughter, Julia, Edward, and James. None of the children survived past the age of 6.
From the Lake Crystal Harold Newspaper, dated January 7, 1891:[6] Several weeks ago the children of Frank Bender in Butternut Valley were taken sick with diptheria. One child died, and the others, two boys, got better; then the mother was taken with it, and a few days later was confined. this makes the case more complicated and she has been in a critical condition since. The membrane has forced its way up into her nostrils and down her throat as far as can be seen. Since the mother has become so bad, the two boys have had a relapse, and their throats are again covered with the membrane. Mrs. B and the boys are in great need of care; the town authorities we believe have made every effort to secure a competent nurse, but thus far have been unable to get one. The siuation is one that calls forth the sympathies of the entire community. The sister of Mrs. Bender has been constantly in attendance, and is about worn out with care. Occasionally a neighbor will venture to go there, but is unable to remain any length of time, and in fact they ought not to leave their homes, and if they did it would not be right to return to them until they are satisfied they will not carry the disease with them. Mr. Bender renders such assistance as he can, but according to the quarantine laws he has no right to leave the premises for anything."
From the Lake Crystal Harold Newspaper, dated January 14, 1891:[7] "Death's Harvest Last Friday the two little Bender boys died, and on Sunday morning the mother died. This makes three children and mother who have died from this disease within a very short time. There is yet one little boy left and at least account he was doing well, and was able to be about the house. A few moments before the last one died he was sitting on the floor, apparently doing well, but suddenly dropped over dead, from heart trouble, produced by the disease. We have heard of no family thus sorely afflicted, and this state of affairs was produced mainly by want of care, and taking cold, bringing on a relapse."
Frank lost his entire family in a very short amount of time. In 1900, he is listed as a boarder, in Lake Crystal, MN, in the home of Lester Roberts. [8] Shortly after this census, Frank did remarry to Margaretta Gurtz Ott. The couple were married on August 26, 1900 in Hanska, Watonwan, Minnesota. [9] Frank and Margaret did not have any children.
Frank and Margaret lived in Lake Crystal, MN for 20 years [10][11][12] Shortly after, the 1920 census, Frank and Margaret moved to Hot Springs, Garland, Akansas. They remained in Hot Springs the remainder of their days. [13][14] Margaret died in 1928 and Frank is found living as a boarder at 5 Pond Street in the home of Will M. Conway. [15]
Frank passed away on April 5, 1930 in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the age of 78. He died as a result of injuries from a auto accident.[16] He is buried alongside his wife, Margaret, in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hot Springs. [17]
