Biography

Mattie was born in June 1892 in Poinsett County, Arkansas. She is the daughter of Robert Stone and Hadena Albright. She passed away in November 1978 in Harrisburg, Poinsett County, Arkansas. Please note a difference in birth date: 1900 census gives her birth date as June 1892; US Social Security Death Index has February 1892.^[1] She is buried in Holly Springs Cemetery, Harrisburg, Poinsett County, Arkansas. Her grave marker gives only the year 1892 for her birth and 1978 for her death.^[2]

In 1900 Mattie is living in the household of her mother Hadena and stepfather Edward Cole in Bolivar Township, Poinsett County, Arkansas.

In 1910 Mattie is still living with her mother and stepfather in Bolivar, Poinsett County, Arkansas. Note her name is misread as "Mollie Stane."^[3]

In 1930 Mattie is living with Edgar Mills in Bolivar, Poinsett, Arkansas. They apparently had no children; none are listed on the census with them.^[4]

Birth

There is a discrepancy in Mattie's birth month as given in different records. The 1900 census says she was born in June 1892. The US Social Security Death Index gives her birth as February 1892. Since earlier records are likely to be more accurate and the 1900 census information was provided by Matt herself, the month of June will be assumed to be correct.

Marriages

There are two marriages for Mattie Stone of Harrisburg, Poinsett, Arkansas.

The first is a marriage record between Mattie B Stone and Randall H. Fussell on 20 June 1909 in Poinsett County, Arkansas. ^[5] This apparently was not a valid marriage, Mattie is still living with her mother and stepfather as listed on the 1910 census. She would have been only 17 years old at the date of the marriage.

A second marriage record between Mattie Stone and Edgar Mills is found in Poinsett County on 24 December 1912. Mattie is listed as single. ^[6] This appears to have been a valid marriage because Mattie is still using the name Mills at the time of her death.
