Solomon was born on October 3, 1748 in Brimfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. He is the son of Adonijah Russell and Mary Sherman. [1]Solomon was the eighth child born to Adonijah and Mary.
Not much is known about Solomon's early days. He did marry Anna Nichols on January 24, 1771 in Brimfield. [2] The couple had 10 children, all born in Brimfield: Justus, William, Hulda, John, Anna, Parvis, Julius, Candace, Orlands, and Solomon Jr..
On June 16, 1782, Solomon entered the service of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was a Private in Captain Joseph Hoar Jr.'s Compnay, Colonel Gideon Burt's Regiment. Solomon marched from Brimfield, MA to Springfield and Northampton, MA to defend the government.This was a 90 mile round trip and company was allowed horse rations.[3]
In 1790, Solomon had moved his family to Hoosick, Albany, New York. [4] ON August 17,1796, Solomon leased a farm in Bethlehem, Albany, New York from Stephen Van Rensselaer III as part of the Rensselaer Manor Estate. The farm was 61.5 acres. [5] Solomon is taxed in Bethlehem in 1799. His real estate value was $1339, personal estate was $110, and he was taxed $1.44. [6] The following year shows Solomon in Bethlehem. The household shows 1 male age 10-16, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female under age 10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 45 and over.[7] In 1810, Solomon is still in Bethlehem with his family. [8]
Solomon passed away on October 18, 1829 at the age of 81 in Bethlehem. He was originally buried in the Bender Family Burying Ground off of Elsmere Ave., however the graves were moved to the Bethlehem Cemetery in Delmar in 1935-1936. [9][10] Solomon's last will and testament was probated on October 20, 1829. In his will, Solomon lists his wife, Anna, son Justus, and daughters Anna, wife of Edward Haswell, Persis, wife of John Weston, Candace, wife of William K. Bender, and daughter Hulda, wife of George Merfield.[11]
