William was born 30 Jan 1895 (War record) and baptised 17 Mar 1895 St John, Worlds End, Kensington and Chelsea, England, the son of William Christmas Butler, and Ellen Holland of 18 Bratan St. [1] [2]
After emigrating to Canada he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was killed in action in France.
In 1901 the family lived on Drakes Corner Great Wigborough, Essex. [3]
In 1911 he emigrated to Canada to take up farming, settling in Washington, Ontario. On 15 Nov 1915, he volunteered and enlisted at Woodstock joining the 71st Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. On attestation at enlistment he was found to be 5’11” with blue eyes and brown hair and have a deep scar behind the left knee. Service No: 127577. After training his Battalion sailed for England from Halifax on the RMS Olympic arriving at Liverpool on 11th April 1916. On 28 June 1916 he was transferred to the 73rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment). and left for le Havre, France on 12 Aug 1916. On 7 October 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then acting Corporal on 16 Dec 1916. In early 1917, the Battalion were in the Carency Sector near Vimy Ridge, north of Arras. An attack on 1 Mar 1917 resulted in his death.[4][5]

He died 1 Mar 1917 at the age of 22 and was buried at Givenchy-en-Gohelle Canadian Cemetery Souchez, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France PLOT B. 1.[7]
