His obituary was published as follows:

JOSIAH ALLEN

The death of Josiah Allen occurred Monday evening at his home on Upper Church street, after being confined to his bed for a number of years. For the past week Mr. Allen failed rapidly, and the end came peacefully. He was one of the oldest and best known citizens in this section.
He was born in Jay, Sept, 24, 1833, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Allen. During his early life, he assisted his father on the farm and about 69 years ago entered the meat business which he carried on for 42 years. He also ran a slaughter house here.
January 27, 1855 he married Miss Helen Macomber of Macomber Hill, the ceremony being performed by her grandfather. Mrs. Allen was a North Jay girl, la daughter of Ichabod and Rebecca Hayden Macomber. They went housekeeping on Main street and soon after purchased the house in which both have died. This house is just across the line in Jay in Franklin county while the remainder of the property is in Livermore Falls in Androscoggin county.
Mrs. Allen's death occurred about two years ago and since that time, Mr. Allen has been tenderly cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Russell. Charles L. Macomber of North Jay, a brother of Mrs. Allen has also been constant and thoughtful in his attention to Mr. Allen. Mr. Allen maintained an interest in present day affairs and in politics until the last. He was a staunch democrat although a strong supporter of Theodore Roosevelt.
He was a member of the Livermore Falls Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Allen had no children but provided a home for three children of Mrs. Allen's sister whose husband had died when the oldest was but four years of age. Those children were Charles Cole of North Jay, Mrs. Annie L. Woodman and Mrs. Charlotte Frederica Sanborn, both of Lynn, Mass., all of whom survive. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ella Bunker of Wilton.
The funeral was held from the home today at 2 00 P. M. Rev. C. Harry Atkinson, pastor of the Baptist church conducted the services. Interment was at Jay Hill Cemetery. The bearers were Charles Cole of North Jay, Charles L. Macomber, John Macomber and Leon Kyes of Jay and Wesley S. Spear of Livermore Falls.
