Robert, 1st of Bandon, was a Scottish landowner. Born about 1595, he was the second son of David Bethune, 12th of Balfour, and his wife Margaret Wardlaw.[1]
On 8 Jan 1629 in Edinburgh he married Marion Inglis, daughter of a wealthy Edinburgh businessman named Thomas Inglis who had acquired the estate of Aithernie near Scoonie.[1]
As a younger son, his fortunes were transformed by the marriage, which enabled him jointly with Marion to acquire in May 1633 the estate of Bandon near Markinch in Fife,[2] with sasine registered to him and Marion on 30 Jul 1633. Their fortified house there is now a ruin. In addition, in 1635 he was able to buy the lands of Pilmure.[3]
Catherine Bethune in 1657 married Patrick Lindsay, 3rd of Wormiston, becoming the ancestress of the Earls of Lindsay.
He died in 1660.
