Biography

Robert William Erskine Burrowes was born in 1841, his birth being registered at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in the 3rd quarter of that year^[1]. He was the son of Robert Burrowes and Frances Trench.

He was baptised on 14 July 1841 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire^[2].

In the 1851 England Census, Robert Burrows (aged 9) was recorded in the household of his grandmother Letitia Le Poer Trench (66), along with his sister Amy Burrows (15) in Bathampton, Somerset. Also in the household was his aunt Augusta Trench (27), three visitors and five servants^[3].

He was with the Bengal Staff Corp, attaining the rank of Captain.

Sadly Captain Robert William Erskine Burrowes passed away on 20 December 1873 at the age of about 32 in Guernsey, unmarried. Notice of his death was printed on page 20 of the Homeward Mail from India, China and East dated 29 December 1873:

Burrowes— Dec. 20, at Guernsey, Capt. Robert Wm. Erskine Burrowes, Bengal Staff Corps.^[4]

He was buried on 26 December 1873 at Backwell, Somerset^[5].

Administration of his effects was granted on 19 January 1874 at the Principal Registry by his father Robert Edward Burrowes of Bourton Court Flax Bourton in the County of Somerset, Esquire^[6]. Effects under £450
